Small Steps, Big Impact: Bernie Lunario

When Bernie’s son Stephen was a baby, he was quiet and reserved. He liked to play with his toys alone, often lining up toy cars and fixating with round objects, but keeping to himself. Soon his silence became a concern for the parents. When Stephen was three, other kids his age had already reached a few milestones, but Stephen remained his usual quiet self.

Soon Bernie Lunario, CC&B Technical Designer at CriticalRiver, consulted a doctor and his eldest son Stephen was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Stephen has since then been under early intervention services tailored to his needs. Now at 12, Stephen enjoys imaginative play and shooting basketball.

“For both my wife and me, the most challenging part of being a parent and a working professional has been attending to our kids’ school schedule. Since my wife is a public-school teacher, I take Stephen to his therapy sessions,” Bernie says.

Working with CriticalRiver has helped Bernie prioritize his family while maintaining his professional responsibilities. “CriticalRiver truly supports its employees and their families. The company’s comprehensive HMO provides peace of mind for our healthcare needs, especially in emergencies. Plus, the flexibility of working from home means I can be there for my family whenever they need me,” he adds.

For parents with a kid in the Autism Spectrum, a small change becomes a big change. With the help of his family and doctors, Stephen continues to make steady progress improving his speech and communication.

He is now more confident among peers and fun-loving and funny in a whole new way.

His parents are looking further ahead.
